A country as large as India cannot be explored adequately within a few weeks. Here are some places you shouldn't miss if your time is limited to a month or less.
The deserts of Rajasthan, the beaches of Goa and the tall peaks of the Himalayas are all located within India, and there is something for everybody, even on a modest budget. This article lists five unforgettable sites in the country which will make a lasting impression. The Taj MahalThis monument situated in Agra was built out of love and was constructed over a period of 22 years by 20,000 people. Craftsmen from Pakistan, Persia and even as far away as modern Turkey also contributed to the rich, beautiful Islamic decorations and scroll work which adorn the structure. Passages from the Muslim holy book, the Qur'an, are etched into the main archways on the front of the building. The Taj, along with the four minarets which surround it, is made entirely of white marble. Indian author and Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore described the Taj Mahal as, "a tear on the face of eternity." MumbaiHip, energetic and full of economic and social optimism, India's financial centre on the coast of the Arabian Sea boasts some of the nation's best hotels. The Leela Kempinski and the Oberoi are two such examples and they offer impeccable accommodation. With all of its museums, parks and night clubs, Mumbai is India's answer to New York. The citizens come from all over the country speaking different languages and observing various religious customs. One interesting ethnic group in town is the Parsis, who trace their ancestry to Iran. They worship fire and lay their deceased family members on top of the cylinder shaped Towers of Silence. GoaIn addition to the sun, sand and sea this state has some important pilgrimage sites for Christians. The Basilica of Bom Jesus is located here, along with several other churches and monuments which reflect the European impact on this part of India over the past five hundred years. Don't forget to try the local food, which is a delicious blend of Indian and Portuguese influences. JaipurIt's called "the pink city" because many of the important historical sites are various shades of that colour. Located in the desert state of Rajasthan in the northeast near Pakistan, the Amber Fort is the most impressive of all the structures within the city, and it's made of white marble and red sandstone. An easy excursion from Jaipur can include Ranthambore National Park, a large tiger reserve. SikkimThis tiny Himalayan region wedged between Nepal and Bhutan has much to offer the visitor. Hill stations, fantastic views of Kanchenjunga, the world's third highest mountain, and abundant flora and fauna are some of the biggest attractions. A variety of medicinal plants grow in Sikkim, one of them includes nardostachys grandiflora, which is used as a laxative and thrives above altitudes of 12,000 feet. Animal lovers will be delighted to encounter red pandas and musk deers which are natives of this area. The best time to visit is from March to June or from September to December.
