Highlights of Travelling in IndiaBest Places in India and Four Reasons to Book a Holiday in India
The best places to see in India offer stunning architecture, sacred sites, wildlife parks and tropical beaches, all in one country.
Even if one had a whole lifetime to travel around India, it would not be possible to see all that this country has to offer. There is a lot to see in India, and one of the best things about travelling in India is that it is one of the cheapest countries to travel in. India's Amazing ArchitectureThe Taj Mahal is the most famous example of India’s architectural highlights but there is a lot more in India for those who can’t get enough of magnificent buildings and ancient ruins, from the Red Fort in Delhi to the medieval Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. The state of Rajasthan is home to old forts and palaces including the truly stunning Lake Palace in Udaipur. South India has hundreds of Hindu temples the largest and most famous being the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, and ancient ruins including the ruins of the medieval Vijayanagara kingdom in Hampi. Sacred Places In India There are sacred cities in India Varanasi in the north to Kanchipuram in the south. Devout Hindus bathe in the holy river Ganges as it flows through the northern Indian towns of Haridwar and Rishikesh, and both towns are busy with ashrams and yoga centres. India is of course the land of gurus – some more holy, some less. Bodhgaya in Bihar is where the Buddha reached enlightenment, and the beautiful Golden Temple in Amritsar in the Punjab is a place most Sikhs will visit at least once in their lifetime. The Jama Masjid in Delhi is one of India’s largest mosques, South India is filled with Hindu pilgrimage destinations, and Ladakh in the Himalayas is a centre for Tibetan Buddhist culture. Wildlife Parks In IndiaIndia has 88 national parks and 490 wildlife sanctuaries and the main attraction in most of the parks is the elusive tiger. Most visitors looking for tigers in India come back disappointed: despite the Project Tiger, launched in 1973 to protect wildlife in India, tigers are still a rare sight. Visitors to India's national parks are much more likely to spot elephants, and many parks offer elephant rides along with jeep safaris for wildlife spotting. Many wildlife sanctuaries also have accommodation inside the sanctuary area making it possible to watch wild animals right outside one’s own doorstep. Tropical Beaches in IndiaFrom Goa to Gokarna to Kerala, there are miles and miles of tropical beaches in India, and here it is still possible to watch the sunset with a cold drink in hand for relatively little money. Goa is India’s busiest beach holiday resort with Kerala a close second in popularity. Gokarna is a popular backpacker beach place but it is developing fast to accommodate mid-range and luxury tourists. The resorts around Chennai, Mamallapuram and Pondicherry on India’s east coast offer alternative beaches.
